Hongdea Street-Performance

~Hongdea Street-Performance ~

When we talk about things to do in Hongdea, the things come to your mind immediately may be eating, shopping, and clubbing. You may miss out some amazing activities you could join at Hongdea.

I’m here to let you know Hongdea is not only an area for eating, dating, clubbing and etc., but it is also an area for youth chasing their dream.

There are a road nearby Hongik University stn Exit 9 called Pedestrian-Friendly Street(걷고싶은거리) where it is crowded with locals and tourists from around 5pm every night.

There are usually groups of people waiting for the night street performances like singing, dancing and magic show which are performed by youth or in groups.

All of them showcase their talent in public for chasing their dreams. They may not be well-known now, but who knows, some of them may turn into future-to-be K-POP stars someday.

When you come to visit Hongdea, why not stop here and take a few minutes enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, feel the enthusiasm from performers, and show them your encouragement.

Daehak-ro

Near Hongdae, there is also a place where great amount of artists are gathered together.  It is "Daehak-ro" (대학로) and this place is known for plays from little theaters. But not only the play, they also have comedies or other smaller scaled concerts :) And for the positive side of this is that you can encounter the high quality cultural art, and the sitting is very close with the stage so you can even hear their breathes!

Daehak-ro has many little theaters, so you can find the play or concert or whatever you want to see; but also they have many place to eat. Since Daehak-ro was and still is the center of cultural art for long long time, there are restaurants with long history. Have a date with your loved one with a play then a restaurant - what a perfect date course!

Also Marronnier Park is near by. Marronnier Park is like a symbol of Daehak-ro. The park is included with children's playground, outdoor stage, pond, fountain, convenient stores, etc. For the outdoor stage, mainly many amateur singers are performing their music.

Marronnier Park was also featured in <MBC We Got Married>, where Jo Jeongchi and Jung In met for first time in from the show.

You can also see the street artists often in the area :)

Daehak-ro is located in subway line 4 Hyehwa Station (혜화역). So take subway at line 2 (green line) at Hongik Univ. Station (홍대입구역), then transfer to line 4 (light blue line) at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (동대문역사문화공원역). Off at Hyehwa Station (혜화역) then exit 1. Then you'll see Daehak-ro.

So how about a walk in Marronnier Park and see some interesting performances?

Hongdae playground

I mentioned about Hongdae playground (shorten from Hongik children's playground or 홍대놀이터, Hongdae noliteo) before for Freemarket and street performances. But I actually never really talked about what is so special about this place. Hongdae playground is one of Hongdae area's speciality - it started as children's playground long long time ago but now it can be seen as a meeting point since so called "Hongdae people" gathers at this playground.

This place is a space for many artists; so time to time, you can see performing arts and concerts. Just like the photo above, there is an street art performance

... and a magician shows his magic tricks

... and at nights, you can see the amazing songs performed by musicians.

Where are all these people come from? It looks crowded but isn't it look people are enjoying and having fun? Feel this excitement! Yay!

The wall of playground is decorated with colorful graffiti, street dancers are showing off their dances, and a photographer who captures the moment... what a collaboration of music, art, and photography!

To find the location of the playground, please refer to our posting of Hongdae Freemarket (click to transfer to the posting), where you can find the map. This place is great for all day, but if you want to see the concerts, it's mainly at the evening and nights. There are many street foods on your way, so you won't feel hungry! I'll be back with more place tomorrow so please keep checking our blog :)
